Singer and rapper Lizzo channeled the classic Whoopi Goldberg sequel to the 1990s, Sister Act 2: Back to the habit, for his performance of "Juice" at the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards on Monday.
To begin with, Lizzo donned the same kind of choral dress scene as Lauryn Hill's character Rita Watson during the last performance of "The Hymn of Joy" at the All-State Choir Championship.
She then included an iconic moment of the scene directly in the film. "Your teacher says: take off your dresses," said a stage manager to students who were waiting behind the scenes of the film, just like one of Lizzo's chansonniers at the MTV Awards. Then it was time to party, with dance steps and ladders straight out of the movie.
According to MTV, it was Lizzo's very first performance at a awards ceremony, and she was successful. Deloris van Cartier (or rather, Sister Mary Clarence) would be proud.
As one of the greatest movies of the 90s (Fight me) and one of the most recognizable final performance scenes of the time, fans have lost the head in front of the performance on Twitter.
Happy, happy, Lizzo, we love you.
