During a address at Auburn University in AlabamaCIA Director Gina Haspel unveiled some of the classified information on the CIA's next major move: the launch of an Instagram page.
Haspel has cloned the audience in the agency's decision by evoking the know-how of new hires on social networks, as well as the transparency and challenges of an agency dedicated to the secrets that communicates its work to the public.
"Just to talk for a moment about transparency, the CIA of course has a Twitter account," said Haspel. "Our public affairs office is preparing to launch our Instagram account."
"It's a new world," said moderately General Ronald L. Burgess, former head of intelligence agencies, who had previously acknowledged that he was known as the "father of Guantanamo Bay," evoking the dystopian novel a world of undisputed governmental authority.
Haspel acknowledged that some CIA members were not too happy about the fact that the agency has social media. Because you know, spying stuff.
"We try to be as open as possible and protect the secrets we need to protect," Haspel said.
Of course, the CIA is not the only agency to have social media. The NSA and the FBI also have Twitter accounts. And the FBI even has its own Instagram! Photos of fieldwork … and jokes about his trainees?
The only current account of the ICA could be a surrogate page, currently filled with random code.
It may be important for intelligence agencies to be on Instagram, not just on Twitter. On the one hand, Russian agents would have made greater use of Instagram that Facebook in its efforts to manipulate the 2016 United States presidential election But more importantly, if the agencies do not claim their pseudonyms, all that represents them on a platform of more than a billion users are accounts parodic memes, like this one named "theliteralnsa".
"One of the most unique challenges at this point in history is the pace of technological change," Haspel said earlier in his speech. "We are working hard at the CIA and other US intelligence agencies to stay abreast of these changes and stay on the leading edge of technology."
Well guys, a gram is a good start! Because – beware, sire lords – the official instagram account of the CIA is clearly where the agency will now direct all its information.
