150 million euros of DTT readjustment assistance: up to 850,000 neighborhood communities benefited
From this date, operators will be able to use the 700 MHz band to start offering telephony services, 5G greater reach that no other mobile connection at the moment, since the 4G operates in the 800 MHz band, and the 2G and 3G in the 900 MHz band, so that the mobile coverage with the 5G will reach areas so far inaccessible.
This 700 MHz band (which goes from the 694 to 790 MHz) is currently occupied by TNT. The channels will have to be reorganized and some antennas and amplifiers will have to be adapted to this process, which leaves TNT between 470 and 694 MHz. This cost, estimated by the government, will be between 104 and 677 euros.
Therefore, they approved two royal decrees: one, the dela release of the 700 MHz bandas planned and requested by the European Union to member countries; and another in the form of grant to adapt antennas of a value of 150 million euros. With this amount, the government estimates that "there will be enough money to adapt the antennas of 850,000 neighborhood communities in Spain.
Yoigo could join the 700 MHz auction in 2020
The National plan for DTT It has also raised an additional 22 million euros for public and private television channels, which will broadcast simultaneously for several months, until the frequencies where the television is now extinct are cut off. The next step will be for DTT channels to begin operating in the new frequencies in the next few months, where they will display alerts indicating the names of those channels.
What has not been mentioned yet, it will be the new TNT with DVB-T2, which should be the next standard we will use in a few years to watch TV with more efficient codecs allowing us to improve the quality of the broadcasts and the efficiency of the spectrum. And this change could also lead us to all the channels in Spain are, finally, in HD; something that must take place by 2023.
The 700 MHz auction for operators is expected to take place in early 2020 and the government is expected to invest billions of dollars in exchanging licenses for this spectrum to operators. Today, we also know that Yoigo (MásMóvil) would be interested in the acquisition of spectrum in this frequency range in order to be able to join Movistar, Vodafone and Orange at the auction.
