China's biggest science fiction novel, The problem of the three bodies, is under development for a potential television series, according to CX Live. If this happens, it will come after the massive success of another great science fiction adaptation of the country, The wandering earth.
The Chinese entertainment company YooZoo Entertainment owns the rights to the series and apparently works on an adaptation of the book. CX Live discovered a advertising form submitted to the Chinese government which lists the production details of the proposed series, which will apparently run for 24 episodes and could start spinning in September. A source confirmed at The edge that the form is legitimate and that the company has been working on the development of the series. If the series were to start spinning, this evolution would be the last step in the adaptation of novels to film or television.
Written by Cixin Liu in 2006 – and translated into English in 2014 by Ken Liu – The problem of the three bodies was a success of the Chinese science fiction scene, winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015. It begins during the Cultural Revolution in China when a dissident scientist is exiled to a remote research center. During her research, she establishes her first contact with a hostile extraterrestrial species called Trisolarans, who lives on a planet in a chaotic solar system and immediately plans to take control of the Earth. In modern times, the novel follows a professor and a detective investigating the deaths of several scientists and discovering a group preparing for the arrival of the Trisolarans.
The book is the first of an ambitious trilogy (The problem of the three bodiesfollowed by The dark forest and End of death), in which Liu explores not only the imminent invasion of Trisolarans, but also the brutal nature of the universe as other advanced exotic species competing for space and power until the end of time. An entry written by fans of the series, The redemption of time, is expected later this summer.
The novel has already been adapted: Chinese director Fanfan Zhang shot a movie version a few years ago, but this was put on hold due to a number of problems. (A person familiar with this effort said that it was bad.) Last year, a report from Financial Times suggested that Amazon had spent more than a billion dollars on the rights of the show, but YooZoo says that he remains the exclusive rights holder and that he still had plans to produce an adaptation. However, it is not difficult to imagine a series debuting in China and moving towards a streaming platform like Amazon or Netflix.
Interest jumped after the adaptation of another story of Cixin Liu, The wandering earthwho recently started streaming on Netflix. This film, which required many special effects and accessories, proved that the Chinese film industry could handle a big budget science fiction movie. Given that The problem of the three bodies is the biggest genre novel out of China, this could show that The wandering earth It was not a one-way miracle and paved the way for more adaptations of the country.
